Essay Writing Steps
Essay according to the Indonesian
Dictionary (KBBI) is a prose essay that discusses a problem in passing from the
author's personal point of view. There are also opinions from several experts,
one of which is Soetomo. According to him, an essay is a short essay about a
problem that is of public interest to be researched and discussed. There are
two types of essays, namely scientific essays and literary essays. Scientific
essays are more objective, while literary essays are more subjective.
In general, the structure of
the essay itself is divided into three, namely opening, content, and closing. The
opening contains an introduction or description in order to understand the
topic that will be brought in an essay in the opening. The goal is to make it
easier for readers to understand the contents of the essay that will be
conveyed. Content is a section that explains the theme or topic of the essay in
detail. The author will describe the opinions successively with the ideas
arranged in the framework. The basics of argumentation are also explained in
the content section. For example, theory or expert opinion combined with data
and facts in the field. Readers will believe the author's opinion conveyed in
the essay through the theory, data, and facts written down. Closing is the
final part in an essay, this closing or conclusion is in the form of a sentence
that summarizes the important things that have been reviewed in the
introductory and discussion chapters. In this section the author can write
briefly, concisely, and clearly.
After knowing the structure of the essay, we move on to the step of writing an essay. There are several stages as follows;
1. Determining the theme
Topics or themes can make it easier to think about what you want to convey in a text. The topic becomes a benchmark in writing so as not to get out of the discussion. Choosing an interesting topic is highly recommended to attract someone to read.
2. Make outline essay
Once you have the topic you want to cover, outline it in your essay. Whatever you want to write, where is the source, and how will it be delivered in what way it is written.
3. Make sub-topics in the form of bullet points
Create several subtopics and develop the subtopics that have been created. Here the author can also express his thoughts in the form of his own opinion as a writer on the topic discussed in short and clear sentences.
4. Making conclusions
At the end of the text, a paragraph is written in the form of a conclusion, which is a summary of the points you have put forward and gives your final perspective to the reader.
5. Write full text and check writing.
After going
through the stages above in the form of outlines, points, and so on, the
writing is continued in its entirety from the opening paragraph to the closing.
After finishing writing, it is recommended to re-examine the results of the
